Effects of Body Size and Slope on Sprint Speed of a Lizard ( Stellio ( Agama ) Stellio )
نویسندگان
چکیده
SUMMARY 1. The agamid lizard Stellio stellio L. accelerates quickly and reaches maximum speed over short distances. 2. Maximum speed on the level is proportional to body mass to the ^ power. This relation differs from predictions based on an interspecific scaling model of "geometric" similarity (M°) and is intermediate between predictions based on interspecific scaling models of "elastic" similarity (Mi) and of "static stress" similarity (M%). 3. Maximum speed was also measured on slopes ranging from —15 0 to + 6o°. The effect of slope on speed varies with body mass. The maximum speed of large lizards decreases on steep slopes, but that of small lizards is remarkably independent of slope.

Effects of Body Size and Slope on Acceleration of a Lizard
1. The agamid lizard Stellio ( = Agama) stellio L. accelerated quickly on a level track. Lizards reached 95 % of maximum speed in an average of only 0-31 m and 0-19s. 2. Large lizards had higher initial accelerations (~M') and accelerated over longer distances and times than did small lizards. As a result, larger lizards achieved higher maximum speeds. Lizards of a given size that accelerated q...
متن کاملAnalysis of monoamines, adenosine and GABA in tissues of the land snail Helix lucorum and lizard Agama stellio stellio during hibernation.
The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of monoamines, GABA and adenosine in the brain, heart and haemolymph of the land snail Helix lucorum and in the brain, heart and blood of lizard Agama stellio stellio during long-term hibernation. We measured levels of the monoamines serotonin (5-HT) and its main metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA), dopamine (DA) and its met...
متن کاملUltrastructure of developmental stages of Hemolivia mariae (Apicomplexa: Haemogregarinidae), natural parasite of the Australian sleepy lizard, in experimentally infected deviant hosts.
Mabuya vitatta (Olivier) (Scincidae) and Agama stellio (L.) (Agamidae) were infected with Hemolivia mariae Smallridge et Paperna, 1997 by ingestion of tick viscera from Amblyomma limbatum Neumann, fed as nymphs on naturally infected Australian sleepy lizards, Tiliqua rugosa Gray. The unnatural infection apparently interfered with the developmental schedule of the parasites. Transmission electro...
متن کاملMorphology of the feeding system in agamid lizards: ecological correlates.
The interaction of organismal design with ecology, and its evolutionary development are the subject of many functional and ecomorphological studies. Many studies have shown that the morphology and mechanics of the masticatory apparatus in mammals are adapted to diet. To investigate the relations between diet and the morphological and physiological properties of the lizard jaw system, a detailed...
متن کاملVirulence of lizard malaria: the evolutionary ecology of an ancient parasite-host association.
The negative consequences of parasitic infection (virulence) were examined for two lizard malaria parasite-host associations: Plasmodium agamae and P. giganteum, parasites of the rainbow lizard, Agama agama, in Sierra Leone, West Africa; and P. mexicanum in the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis, in northern California. These malaria species vary greatly in their reproductive charact...
